GWL 30th January 1917

Villainous day – rain wind and mud, all in great force.  There is not an atom of news.  One of my subalterns has gone and got engaged to one of the sisters at the Hospital…….They seem very happy.  He walks five miles in the rain regularly every evening when his work is done to see her……..  There are a lot of geese flying about now.  So far no success against them, but I am organising a very careful scheme of aerial defence against geese, which should have good results.

An awful thing happened last night.  We ran entirely out of drinks.  It has never happened before.  Very wet weather accounts for it.  I am glad you have got your old pupils back again.”
