GWL 24th December 1916

……….I think it is quite likely that we shall get a dose of Mr Mackensen down this way before the year is very old.  It seems the obvious thing to do, so perhaps they won’t do it.  This is the third Christmas away from you – We have arranged a feed for the commando and a barrel of beer.  I hope they will be happy…..”

“Didn’t I tell you my breeches had arrived?  They arrived about a month ago.”

Mr Mackensen refers to Field Marshall Anton Ludwig August von Mackensen who was one of the most successful German Commanders of the War.  He was instrumental in the capture of Bucharest for which he was awarded the Grand Cross of the Iron Cross.
