GWL 6th June 1916

……….We have just had news of the navy battle.  Pretty ghastly the losses, but I suppose we really did have the best of it……. That was really rather rather comical about Wodehouse.  I am afraid I must have forgotten.  so now, your husband having reached, temporarily, field rank, you feel you can with confidence address generals.  Perhaps when I am a Colonel you may even address the British workman on equal terms – Heavens what sarcasm!”

The reference is to the Battle of Jutland in which  the Grand Fleet took on the German Navy off the coast of Denmark.  Although the British overall losses were significantly greater then the Germans, the Germans had failed to break the British  blockade of German ports.
