GWL 20th April 1916

Your letters have all come up to April 6th.  The parcels you send are just what i want.  The last day or two have been rather trying.  I had a splendid time in the raglan;  I was away two days and came back to find my office in a beastly mess and my worthy assistant busy making the most awful howlers.  I will never go away again……….”

On this day a botched attempt to smuggle guns into southern Ireland in preparation for the Easter uprising came to an end with the scuttling of the “SS Aud” which was in fact the German cargo ship SS Libau in disguise.  Roger Casement, who had been landed by a U-boat at a separate location, was captured.
