GWL 22nd March 1916

No news.  Your letters up to Feb 28th have all arrived.  The school goes merrily on.  How much they are learning I don’t know.  They have just reached the stage when they are thoroughly fogged. You see they are so hopelessly ignorant when they come here.  They know nothing of the simplest things that a regular subaltern was brought up on……………

On the run from morning until night.  I am afraid a good many mails went down in the “Malaya”.  She was a fine ship”.

There is no record of a ship named “Malaya” being sunk around this time.  George may be referring to SS Masunda, a British cargo ship, which was captured by submarine U-35 and sunk by gunfire 11 miles SW ½ S from Cape Matapan in the Mediterranean.
