GWL 12th February 1916

I have been riding all over the country for the last four or five days and have not been able to write.  I got a wire at 4 in the morning and then the fun began.  I have got to try and start a Machine Gun School.

Rather frightened, but I shall have a jolly good try at the thing.  I start again early to-morrow morning and have a 40 mile trek in front of me, the third this week.  This is awfully short, but it must stop.”

Whereas the German Army recognised early in the War that Machine Guns could be decisive, it took longer for the British army to come to the same conclusion.  By 1916 a Machine Gun School had been opened near Grantham and all infantry battalions were expected to do the same.
