I don’t think you could possibly have done better in the choice of things for the parcels.  You have worked hard & the braves will be awfully pleased with the things.  We get our mails all right, only of course they come at rather long intervals – At present we are very inaccessible and it is as much as they can do to feed us.”

At this stage the eastern end of the line was at the far end of the supply line, with limited rations.  Elsewhere the Western Front remained static with no major actions.  However there was a continuous round of skirmishes both above and below ground.
