GWL 24th January 1916

A very fine day and quite hot at times.  The cave very comfortable.  Disturbed last night by a bally owl, who sat outside the door of the cave and shouted at me.  I have devised a method whereby he may be thwarted.  I have stuck a pin upright on a little bit of board; the point sticking up.  This is placed just where he sits.  It is hoped to be that on alighting, prior to hooting, he will sit on the pin.  Good-night.”

The “First Military Service Bill” was published on the 24th and became an act on the 24th and became an Act on the 27th.  All men 18-41 years of age were conscripted.
