GWL 18th November 1915

………We are still where we are, so to speak.  No news at all and rather cold.  The day before yesterday we had a slight strafe with the local mayor.  There is no fuel to be got here and so to of us sallied forth in search of the same – and finding a tree in a lonesome spot proceeded to cut it down.  Next morning to our horror we see the tree lying in the yard, having told our servants to cut it up during darkness.  So of course much running to and fro.  It turns out that this bally tree belongs to the commune!  Its value is five francs!

I think we have been fighting quite long enough…………….”

At this stage the Battalion were waiting to entrain ready for transport to the mediterranean coast.
