GWL 1st August 1915

I am so sorry about Clive.  Damn the war and everything connected with it.  We had the very devil of  “strafe” last night.  Cloudy to-day and it looks rather like a storm.

There is just the very smallest chance, the very, very smallest, but still a chance, that I may get a day or two’s leave about the 2nd week in August.  The Colonel has put my name down I know, but the fact that I have not been out three months since the last heaven sent period may put the squasher on it.  All this of course, Fritz being willing!

Alas, Warsaw seems to be going.  The situation seems rather gloomy.  The Huns are all shouting like mad; I am afraid Warsaw must have fallen.  Well, it is all in the lap of Allah.”

Warsaw finally fell to the Germans on 5th August.

{next post 4th August}
