GWL 30th June 1915

A horrid rainy day.  Fritz has been shelling this charming town rather a lot during the last two days.  Merely cussedness, I think.  I hope not real vice.  Yesterday I had a long day.  Walking about all day looking at trenches and then I took Peter out digging and we did not get back until 2.30 this morning.  We had a drink in his billet and then to bed.

One of my subalterns, by name Parkes, is the most amusing man.  He is the company buffoon and supplies the necessary comic turn………..Just off to the ditches again.”
